Award of the 2017 George Westinghouse Gold Medal to Professor Alan Williams

Professor Alan Williams has been awarded the 2017 George Westinghouse Medal by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The award is for novel research contributions to the fundamental understanding of the formation and reduction of pollutants in fossil fuel flames.

Professor Williams was the Livesey Professor in the Department of Fuel and Energy at Leeds University from 1973-2000, and is currently an Emeritus Professor in the School of Chemical and Process Engineering. Research has been concerned with the combustion of gaseous, liquid and solid fuels including most recently biomass. Professor Williams has been a member of many UK Government Committees.
