Annual ‘Grand Day Out’ for the Biomass Combustion Research Group

The annual ‘Grand Day Out’ for the biomass combustion research group (Jenny Jones’ group) was, this year, to Millington Woods near Pocklington. Millington woods is an ancient woodland which is currently managed for conservation and recreation purposes by the East Riding of Yorkshire County Council. James Taylor (ERY CC) and Mike Burns (MJB Forestry) kindly hosted the group providing fascinating commentary on the history, ecology and economy of the woodland.

Mike is the last traditional charcoal burner working in Yorkshire and much of the day was spent working hard to fill his iron-clad charcoal kiln (which was one of the key attractions for the biomass combustion research group!). After much swinging of axes and heaving of logs, the kiln was ceremoniously fired up by Jenny. The whole group then enjoyed a fantastic barbeque using charcoal from the kiln followed by a guided walk through the woods.
