University Supports Development of Japan-UK Collaborations

The University of Leeds has joined a group of UK and Japanese universities with the aim of developing closer collaborative links. The programme, developed by the British Council, has been named ‘Renkei’ (http://www.renkei-researcher-schools.org/). It kicked off with a researcher development school for PhD students and post-doctoral staff which involved sessions in the UK and Japan.

Ruth Bush from the Doctoral Training Centre in Low Carbon Technologies took part in the school which focused on urban sustainability and resilience. Ruth said “It was a challenging programme that pushed you to explore aspects of cultural differences across nationalities, academic disciplines and individual personalities. Spending time immersed in Japanese culture has highlighted to me the importance of resilience. Japan’s long experience of dealing with natural disasters means resilience is a fundamental concept in its cultural identity as well as within its technological systems and infrastructure. There’s a lot we can learn from one another.”
